Dillingen an der Donau lies in Bavarian Swabia, on the northern bank of the Danube. The old town's shape is simple and clear: a long main street runs parallel to the river, lined with continuous façades and tied together by a few cross streets. The castle stands at one end, and newer districts spread out beyond the historic core.
For centuries Dillingen was a residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg, and in 1549 it became a university town. The university was run by the Jesuits for a long period. Its buildings, along with churches and former monastic complexes, still form a notable part of the old town and appear as large, courtyarded blocks on the map.
