Dingzhou is a county-level city in Hebei, lying on the open North China Plain between Shijiazhuang and Baoding. The land is almost entirely flat, and the city spreads across it in a clear, rectilinear pattern, with long straight roads, broad blocks and a railway running north to south. Beyond the edges, farmland reaches in every direction, criss-crossed by rural roads.
Dingzhou was an important prefectural seat for centuries. Its best-known landmark is the Liaodi Pagoda of Kaiyuan Temple, completed in the Song dynasty and often described as the tallest surviving brick pagoda in China. The celebrated Ding ware porcelain of the Song period takes its name from the old prefecture, although its kilns lay in present-day Quyang County.
