Yangquan lies in eastern Shanxi, among the ridges of the Taihang Mountains close to the border with Hebei. Few cities in the region are so shaped by terrain: the urban area winds through narrow valleys, with neighbourhoods climbing hillsides and main roads following the valley floors. Coal has defined Yangquan's economy since the early twentieth century, and the area is known for its anthracite.
