Jinzhong lies on the flat floor of the Taiyuan Basin in central Shanxi, directly south-east of the provincial capital. Its urban core, Yuci, has grown towards Taiyuan so steadily that the two now almost meet on the map. The streets are laid out in a broad, even grid, and the land stays flat until the mountains rise at the edges of the basin.
The prefecture is best known for the merchant culture of old Shanxi. The walled town of Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, falls within Jinzhong's administrative area, as does the Qiao Family Compound, a large courtyard residence that belonged to a banking family. In the Qing period, Shanxi's merchant families ran exchange houses that operated across much of China.
A Jinzhong map poster centred on Yuci shows a modern city with a small historic heart.
