Diphu is the headquarters of Karbi Anglong district in Assam, and the administrative centre of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The town is set among low hills, and the street map reflects it. Roads wind along the contours, and buildings gather in the valleys and on gentler slopes instead of in a regular grid.
The railway gives the map one of its few straight lines, cutting through a street pattern that otherwise follows the terrain. Around the town, forested hills and small streams take up most of the frame, and the built-up area appears as a loose, organic shape.
