Diré lies in the Tombouctou region of Mali, on the Niger River upstream of Timbuktu, in the area where the river spreads across the flat land of its inland delta and floodplain. On a map, water is the defining element: a broad channel, side branches and seasonal flooded land run close to the town.
Farming along the river, especially rice grown with the seasonal floods, has long supported the town and its surroundings. A Diré map poster shows that relationship directly. The streets gather on higher ground beside the water, and the land around them divides into riverside fields, channels and the drier Sahel beyond.
