Dolisie is the third-largest city in the Republic of the Congo and the main town of the Niari department. It lies in the Niari valley, inland from the Mayombe forest that separates it from the Atlantic coast. On the map, the railway is the central feature, running through the town and shaping the layout of its streets.
The town grew around the Congo–Ocean Railway, which connects Pointe-Noire on the coast with Brazzaville. The centre has a fairly regular pattern of blocks near the station, while the outer districts are more loosely arranged, following the gentle slopes of the valley. Beyond the town, the map quickly opens into savanna and forest.
