Matadi is built on hard, broken ground. The city sits on the left bank of the Congo River where the river narrows and runs fast between rocky hills. From above, the streets do not settle into a grid. They bend and double back as they climb the slopes, and the densest blocks gather along the waterfront.
The name is usually translated from Kikongo as "stones", which fits the terrain well. Matadi is the main seaport of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ocean-going ships can reach it from the Atlantic, and just upstream the rapids stop navigation, so cargo is moved here onto the railway that runs inland toward Kinshasa.
