Douai lies in the Nord department of Hauts-de-France, on the Scarpe River between Lille and Arras. Its Gothic belfry, with a large carillon, is part of the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France. The town was long a centre of law and learning and later became the heart of the northern coalfield, whose mining history still marks the surrounding landscape.
On the map, the historic centre forms a dense core framed by boulevards laid out along the line of the old fortifications. The Scarpe and its canals run through and around the town, with quays, bridges and locks. Straight roads lead out to the mining towns and former pits of the surrounding basin.
