Douarnenez faces a broad, sheltered bay on the western coast of Brittany, and the sea shapes almost every line on its map. The town is built on slopes above several harbours, with streets winding down to the quays. To the west, the narrow Port-Rhu estuary cuts inland, and Tristan Island sits just offshore at its mouth, tied to local legend.
For generations Douarnenez was one of France's great sardine ports, with canneries lining its waterfront. That industrial past gave the town its dense quays and working harbour. The bay is also linked to the legend of Ys, the drowned city of Breton folklore. Today Port-Rhu houses a maritime museum with historic boats moored along the estuary.

A narrow tidal estuary cuts inland on the west side of town, lined with quays and crossed by a bridge, forming one of the map's most distinctive shapes.
Tristan Island
The small island at the mouth of Port-Rhu sits just off the shore, a compact shape in the water that anchors the western edge of the town.
