Ducheng is the seat of Yunan County in western Guangdong. The terrain here is hilly and heavily vegetated, and settlements follow the valleys. On a map the town appears as a compact built-up area along a river. Its streets are shaped by the water and the rising ground on either side, rather than by a strict grid.
The surrounding landscape is one of forested hills, farmland on the valley floors and roads threading through gaps in the terrain. The older part of town is densely packed near the river. Newer districts extend along the main roads where the valley allows. Beyond the edge of town, the map quickly turns quieter as the hills take over.
