Dudinka sits on the east bank of the Yenisei where the smaller Dudinka River joins it, well north of the Arctic Circle. From above, the town is a compact cluster of blocks set back from a long industrial waterfront. Beyond the last streets the map empties almost at once into tundra, lakes and meandering channels, so the built area looks small against the scale of the river.
The port is the reason the town exists. It serves as the river and sea gateway for the Norilsk industrial district, and a railway and road run east from Dudinka toward Norilsk across open, frozen ground. On a map that single line of transport leaving town is one of the few straight marks in a landscape of curved water and scattered lakes.
A Dudinka map poster shows a settlement shaped by permafrost and ice. Buildings here traditionally stand on piles above the frozen soil, and the river is closed by ice for a large part of the year. What reads as a quiet grid on paper is one of the northernmost towns of its size, the administrative centre of the Taymyr district.
