Dysselsdorp lies in the Little Karoo of the Western Cape, a semi-arid valley held between the Swartberg mountains to the north and the Outeniqua range to the south. The town sits east of Oudtshoorn, close to the Olifants River. From above, its streets form a loose grid laid over pale, open ground, with wide gaps between the neighbourhoods.
The settlement grew from a nineteenth-century mission station, and its layout still reflects that origin. A modest centre of church and school is surrounded by residential blocks that extend outward in orderly rows. Past the last houses, cultivated plots along the river give way to scrub and to the long ridges that frame the valley on both sides.

The Olifants River passes close to town. Its course is marked by a band of cultivated land that shows as a softer, more irregular texture against the open Karoo.
