East Saint Louis lies on the flat floodplain known as the American Bottom, directly across the Mississippi from downtown St. Louis. On a map the river forms a broad curve along the western edge, crossed by several bridges. Levees, rail yards and industrial land fill the ground between the water and the residential grid further east.
The city grew as a railroad and industrial hub in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its rail network is still one of the most striking features from above. Long parallel tracks, curves and junctions converge on the river crossings. The Eads Bridge, opened in 1874 and one of the first major steel bridges, reaches the Illinois shore here.
The city has a deep cultural legacy. Miles Davis grew up here, and the Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee was born here. Opened in 1874, the Eads Bridge crosses from downtown St. Louis to the Illinois shore. It is one of several river crossings drawn as strong lines over the water.
