Evansville sits on the north bank of the Ohio River in southwestern Indiana, at a large horseshoe bend that gives the city its shape. The downtown grid was laid out parallel to the river, so it runs at an angle to the north–south grid of the later neighbourhoods. The seam where those two patterns meet is one of the most distinctive features of the city's map.
Kentucky lies across the river, and the land inside the bend is low, flood-prone and protected by levees. During the Second World War, Evansville's shipyard built large numbers of tank landing ships. One of them, LST-325, is now a museum moored on the riverfront. Bosse Field, one of the oldest ballparks still in regular use in the United States, is north of downtown.
