Murfreesboro is often described as the geographic centre of Tennessee, southeast of Nashville along Interstate 24. At the heart of its map is a traditional courthouse square, with the county courthouse in the middle and a small grid of historic streets around it. From there, arterial roads fan out into large areas of newer suburbs.
The West Fork of the Stones River winds along the northwest side of the city. Its green corridor includes the Stones River National Battlefield, site of a major Civil War battle at the turn of 1863. South of downtown, the large campus of Middle Tennessee State University adds a distinct block of quads and sports fields.
