El Palmar sits on the southern flank of the western Guatemalan highlands, where the land drops sharply from the Quetzaltenango plateau toward the Pacific lowlands. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set among ravines and cultivated slopes, with narrow roads following the contours rather than any straight grid.
The volcano Santa María and its active dome, Santiaguito, rise above this part of the department. Volcanic mudflows coming down the river channels forced the original settlement to move, and the present town grew on safer ground. The map still shows that history: the drainage lines run downhill through the area, and the street pattern stays well clear of them.

The settlement moved away from its original site after repeated mudflows, so the street pattern you see today is younger than the name and sits on higher, safer ground.
