El Prat de Llobregat is on the delta of the Llobregat River, just southwest of Barcelona. The ground is completely flat, and on the map the town is surrounded by very large structures. Barcelona's airport and its runways lie to the south, the port and the diverted river mouth are to the east, and a long, straight beach runs along the Mediterranean.
Before the airport and the port expanded, the delta was farmland, and parts of it still are. The town is known for its artichokes and for the Prat chicken, a local breed with bluish legs. Protected lagoons and wetlands along the coast are home to many birds, and they show up on the map as irregular water shapes next to the runways.
