El Salto sits in the uplands of western Jalisco, and from above it reads as a clear, contained settlement. A central grid of short blocks gathers around the older core. Around it, the streets loosen into irregular lanes that run out toward farmland. Once the town gives way, the map fills with the fine texture of field boundaries, dirt tracks and the curves of the terrain.
The name is Spanish for "the leap" or "the drop", a word that turns up often in Mexican place names where land or water changes level. On paper, the town is mostly about proportion: a dense centre, a thinner edge and a few roads leaving in different directions. These roads link it to neighbouring communities and the wider road network of the state.
