Elmshorn sits on the Krückau, a small tidal river that winds through the town before heading west toward the Elbe. From above, the centre forms a compact knot around the old harbour basin, and the streets bend to follow the water rather than any planned grid. Beyond the edges, the map opens into the flat, drained marsh and geest country typical of Holstein, cut by ditches and straight farm lanes.
The railway is the other defining line. Elmshorn is a junction where the route out of Hamburg divides, with one branch heading north toward Kiel and Flensburg and another bending toward the west coast. On paper, those tracks read as long diagonals that slice the town into sectors, with residential streets filling the wedges between them.
The town is also known as the home of Kölln, the oat-flake maker that has long been part of local life.
