Emali grew up along the main corridor between Nairobi and Mombasa, and the map shows that plainly. The highway cuts through the town in a long straight line. Shops, lodgings and markets cluster along it, and residential streets spread out on either side in a looser pattern that fades into the open savanna of Makueni County.
The town is also a junction. A road branches off south toward Loitokitok and the country around Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills, so Emali serves as a turning point for travellers and traders. The Standard Gauge Railway passes nearby as well, adding a second strong line through the landscape beside the old road.
