Emden lies in East Frisia, in the far northwest of Germany, where the Ems river widens toward the Dollart bay and the North Sea. The land around it is flat and low, and on a map that flatness shows as long straight canals and drainage channels running out across the marsh in every direction. The town itself sits at the water's edge, oriented toward its harbours.
At the centre is the Delft, an inner harbour basin framed by the town hall and quays, with smaller canals branching off into the old town. Beyond it, the working port stretches along the estuary, where a large Volkswagen plant ships vehicles by sea. The shift from narrow historic waterways to broad industrial docks is easy to follow from above.
