Ende lies on the southern coast of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, facing the Savu Sea. Its setting is dramatic even on a flat map: the town fills a low neck of land with water on both sides, and the cone of Mount Iya rises at the tip of the peninsula to the south. Streets run between the two shores, and the harbour sits on the sheltered water.
The town is known across Indonesia as the place where Sukarno lived in exile in the 1930s, and where, by his own account, he reflected on the ideas that later became Pancasila. His former house is preserved. Inland, the regency includes Kelimutu, the volcano whose crater lakes change colour and draw visitors from around the world.
