Enger belongs to the Herford district in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, in the rolling countryside known as the Ravensberger Land. From above, it is not one compact settlement but a central town with several outlying districts, joined by country roads that run between fields, small woods and farmsteads.
The historic core is small and closely built, gathered around the collegiate church. It is here that tradition places the grave of Widukind, the Saxon leader who resisted Charlemagne, and the town keeps a museum devoted to him. Around this centre, residential streets spread outward in a mix of older lanes and later housing.
