Ensenada lies on the Pacific coast of Baja California, around the wide curve of Todos Santos Bay. From above, the city fills a strip of flat land between the water and a ring of dry hills. The centre follows a clear grid close to the harbour, while newer neighbourhoods climb into the surrounding slopes and valleys along winding roads.
The port is one of the most important on Mexico's Pacific coast and a regular stop for cruise ships from California. Inland, the Valle de Guadalupe has become known as the country's leading wine region, and to the south the La Bufadora blowhole draws visitors to the rocky coast of the Punta Banda peninsula.
