Oceanside is the northernmost coastal city in San Diego County. From above, it follows a long, straight Pacific shoreline. The harbour sits at the north end, near the vast open land of Camp Pendleton. The downtown grid runs close to the beach, and the city spreads inland in a loose web of residential streets across hills and valleys.
Oceanside Pier, one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast, extends from downtown into the Pacific. It is the city's best-known landmark. Inland, along the San Luis Rey River, stands Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, often called the King of the Missions for its size. The city also has a long surfing tradition.
