Erciş stands near the northern shore of Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey, in the eastern highlands of Anatolia. On the map, the town sits a short distance back from the water, with streets extending across level ground towards the lakeshore. The lake is a vast, blank expanse that takes over the southern part of any frame.
Erciş has a long history, and the old town of the same name was gradually lost to the rising waters of the lake centuries ago. In October 2011 the area was struck by a major earthquake that caused heavy damage in the town, and new housing districts were built in the years that followed.
An Erciş map poster brings these elements together: a modern street network shaped partly by reconstruction, roads running along the lake and inland across the plateau, and the long curving shoreline of Lake Van. In black and white, the empty water gives the composition a striking stillness.
