Fabriano lies in an Apennine valley in the Marche, inland from the Adriatic. Its map shows a dense historic centre surrounded by newer districts that stretch along the valley floor. The Giano river passes close to the old town, and the surrounding hills keep the urban area long and narrow rather than round.
The town is known across Europe for papermaking, a craft practised here since the Middle Ages, and Fabriano is widely credited with refining techniques such as the watermark.
