Fareham grew up where the small Wallington river meets Fareham Creek, the northwestern arm of Portsmouth Harbour. On a map the creek is the anchor. It is a narrow tidal channel pushing inland to the old town, with residential streets fanning out across the land between Southampton and Portsmouth.
The historic High Street, lined with Georgian buildings, runs north from the centre. Newer shopping streets and a ring of roads sit around it. To the east rises Portsdown Hill, a long chalk ridge. The M27 crosses the landscape north of the centre, and Portchester, with its Roman fort walls, lies along the harbour shore within the borough.
