Feldkirch is the westernmost town of Austria of any size, lying in Vorarlberg close to the borders with Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Its layout is shaped by the Ill river, which cuts through a narrow passage in the hills just before it reaches the broad Rhine valley. The old town sits on the river bank, pressed between water and wooded slopes.
The historic centre keeps its compact medieval footprint, with arcaded streets, a market square and surviving towers from the old walls, including the Katzenturm. Above it on the hillside stands the Schattenburg, the castle of the Counts of Montfort, now a museum. The town was also home to the Jesuit school Stella Matutina, where Arthur Conan Doyle studied for a year.
