Fengshan is now a district of Kaohsiung, but it was once a separate city and, before that, the seat of Fengshan County under the Qing. The map shows a closely built urban fabric east of central Kaohsiung. The older core is a web of irregular streets. Beyond it are the straighter grids and wide boulevards of the districts that grew later.
Traces of the Qing town survive. Fragments of the old city walls and gates stand among modern streets, and the Fengyi Academy is among the best-preserved of its kind in Taiwan. It is a Confucian academy founded in the early nineteenth century and carefully restored. The Fengshan River flows through the district toward the harbour, adding a slim line of water to the dense grid.
Fengshan is also home to Weiwuying, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts. It was built on the site of a former military training ground and sits within a large park. Its sweeping roof and the open lawns around it form a rare open space in a closely built district. A Fengshan map poster captures both the old county seat and this modern landmark.

The river crosses the district in a narrow, slightly winding course. Frequent bridges cross it as it flows on toward the harbour of Kaohsiung.
