Formosa is the capital of the Argentine province of the same name. It stands on the right bank of the Paraguay River, which forms the border with Paraguay here. On a map the city is a clear, square grid of blocks running inland from the water, broken at intervals by plazas and wider avenues. Across the river lies the Paraguayan town of Alberdi, which is linked to Formosa by boat.
The riverfront is the city's defining edge. A long costanera, or riverside promenade, follows the bank. The river spreads into channels, islands and wetlands, especially when the water is high. North and south of the centre the land is low and marshy, typical of the humid Chaco, and the map shows lagoons and meandering streams scattered across it.
Luis Jorge Fontana founded Formosa in 1879, and it grew from a small river post into a provincial capital. A Formosa map poster shows how deliberately the city was planned. Straight streets meet the water at right angles, and the wide river closes off the eastern side of the frame. The wetlands beyond the grid soften its edges.
