Posadas, capital of the Argentine province of Misiones, faces the Paraná River at one of its widest points. The Paraguayan city of Encarnación stands across the water, and the San Roque González de Santa Cruz International Bridge joins the two. This long road and rail crossing draws a confident line across the river on any map.
The city follows the classic Spanish-American pattern: a regular grid of square blocks around central plazas, bounded by broad avenues. Its riverfront has been rebuilt as a long costanera with walkways and green space. The rebuild came after the Yacyretá dam downstream raised the water level and widened the river along the city's edge.
