Fort Collins lies in northern Colorado, where the Great Plains meet the first ridges of the Rocky Mountain foothills. The map reads almost like a diagram: a regular grid of arterial roads with College Avenue running north to south through the middle. The city began as a military post in the 1860s and grew into an agricultural and university town. Colorado State University's large campus sits just south of Old Town.
