Greeley lies on the high plains of northern Colorado, east of the Front Range. It was founded in 1870 as the Union Colony, a planned agricultural settlement organised by Nathan Meeker and named after the newspaper editor Horace Greeley. On the map, the original town appears as a very regular grid of numbered streets and avenues.
The Cache la Poudre River runs along the northern edge of the city, lined with trails and green space. It joins the South Platte just to the east. The early colony depended on irrigation, and ditches drawn from the Poudre still run across the surrounding farmland in long, gently curving lines between the square section roads.
The University of Northern Colorado occupies a large campus south of downtown, its buildings and lawns interrupting the grid. As the city expanded westward, newer subdivisions added curving streets and lakes. A Greeley map poster shows the planned colony, the river, and the irrigated plains all within one frame.
