Francavilla al Mare lies on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, just south of Pescara, where the continuous built-up coastline begins to thin out. It has long been a seaside town for summers and weekends. Around 1900 it drew the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, whose converted convent became a meeting place for Gabriele D'Annunzio and other artists.
The shoreline organises the map. A long, almost straight beach runs along one edge, backed by a promenade, the coastal railway and a shallow grid of streets packed between the rails and the road.
