Freising lies on the Isar, north of Munich, and is one of the oldest towns in Bavaria. From above, two hills stand out immediately. The Domberg carries the cathedral and the former prince-bishops' buildings, and to the west Weihenstephan hill rises above the river meadows. The old town sits between them, with a long main street and narrow side lanes.
Weihenstephan is known for its brewery, which claims to be the oldest in the world still in operation. The hill is also home to the life sciences campus of the Technical University of Munich and a university of applied sciences, so the slopes are covered with research buildings, gardens and trial fields.
