Garut fills a wide upland basin in the Priangan highlands of West Java. Volcanoes surround it, including Papandayan, Guntur and Cikuray. On a map the town reads as a dense core of streets set in a bowl. Roads spread outward along the valley floors and then thin out where the slopes begin.
The Cimanuk River runs through the basin, and smaller streams and irrigation channels branch across the rice land around it. In the Dutch colonial era the cool climate and mountain scenery drew visitors, and the town was sometimes called the Switzerland of Java. Today it is better known for leather goods and for dodol, a sweet, sticky confection sold across Indonesia.
