Ciamis lies in the eastern part of West Java, in the hilly region often called Priangan Timur, between Tasikmalaya and Banjar. On a map the town centre is a compact grid around the main square and government buildings, while the roads leading out quickly start to bend and follow the contours of the surrounding hills and valleys.
The area has deep roots in Sundanese history: the regency was long known as Galuh, the name of an old Sundanese kingdom associated with this part of Java. Today much of the land around the town is farmed, with rice paddies in the valleys, gardens and plantations on the slopes, and small villages linked by narrow lanes.
Rivers, including the Citanduy, cut through the wider area, adding curving lines of water to the map.
