Gemena is the capital of Sud-Ubangi province in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The land around it is low and fairly flat, part of the broad Congo Basin where forest and cleared farmland meet. On a map the town appears as a loose network of streets with no dense core, fading gradually into the surrounding country.
Main roads run out of town toward other settlements in the province, and they shape the map more than any river or coastline does.
