Bumba stands on the northern bank of the Congo River in the Mongala province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the top of the river's great northward curve. On a map, the river dominates everything: a vast, braided channel full of long islands and sandbanks, many times wider than the streets of the town beside it. The town itself extends along the bank, its roads running inland from the waterfront.
The river is the main artery of this region, and Bumba has long served as a port where boats, goods and passengers move along the Congo between Kinshasa and Kisangani.
