Isiro is the capital of Haut-Uele province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the colonial period it was known as Paulis. The town lies deep in the interior, in a zone where tropical forest meets savanna, and on the map it appears as a compact network of streets surrounded by green land and small settlements.
The region is historically associated with the Mangbetu people, known for their art and architecture. Isiro grew as an administrative and commercial centre, once connected to a narrow-gauge railway network in the northeast. From above, the town has a relatively regular centre, with roads leading out into the surrounding countryside and toward other towns in the province.
