Georgsmarienhütte lies just south of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony, on the northern slopes of the Teutoburg Forest. The town is made up of several former villages that grew together, so the map shows several separate centres linked by roads through wooded valleys. Wooded hills fill the southern part of the map, while the northern part slopes towards Osnabrück.
The town owes its name and existence to the ironworks founded in 1856 and named after King George V of Hanover and Queen Marie. Steel is still produced here today, and the works form a large industrial area on the map. The former Oesede monastery in the district of Kloster Oesede points to a much older history.
