Gerik is the main town of Hulu Perak, in the far north of the state, close to the Thai border. It sits in a valley of the Perak River, surrounded by forested hills, plantations and small kampung settlements. On a map, the town is a compact grid of shophouse streets with residential areas spreading along the roads that lead out of it.
Gerik is best known as the western gateway to the East-West Highway, the road that crosses the peninsula's mountainous interior to Jeli in Kelantan. East of town, the highway passes Temenggor Lake, a large reservoir whose branching arms reach deep into the forest, and the edge of the Royal Belum rainforest area. The town is a regular stop for travellers heading across.
