Grasse climbs a south-facing slope in the hills behind Cannes. From above, the old town is a dense knot of narrow, twisting lanes packed around the cathedral. Newer roads leave it in long switchbacks, following the contours of the hillside. Villas and gardens spread across the terraces below, and the map shows a town that has had to fit itself to steep ground.
Grasse is widely known as the world's perfume capital. Since the seventeenth century its growers and distillers have worked with jasmine, rose and other flowers, and in 2018 the region's perfume skills were added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. The painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard was born here, and a major perfume house still carries his name.
