Graz, Austria's second-largest city, is divided by the Mur, which flows almost due south through the centre. On the east bank the old town gathers at the foot of the Schlossberg, a steep wooded hill that interrupts the street pattern like a knot in wood. On the west bank, the Lend and Gries districts spread in a looser and more regular grid.
The historic centre and Schloss Eggenberg on the western side are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the difference in scale shows on a map: narrow lanes and courtyards in the old town, a formal palace garden in the west. The Stadtpark wraps around the eastern edge of the centre, following the line of the former fortifications.
Two modern landmarks sit on the river. The Kunsthaus, a curved art museum nicknamed the friendly alien, stands on the west bank, and the Murinsel, a steel platform, is anchored in the middle of the current. The Mur cuts a nearly straight line through the city from north to south, crossed by a series of bridges. The small Murinsel appears as a single point in its current.
Stadtpark ring
Laid out where fortifications once stood, the Stadtpark forms a green crescent on the eastern side of the old town, clearly separating the historic core from the districts beyond.
