Orth an der Donau lies east of Vienna in the Marchfeld, the broad, flat plain of Lower Austria. Its southern side opens onto the Danube floodplain forest, part of the Donau-Auen National Park and one of the last large stretches of free-flowing river landscape in Central Europe. On a map, the town sits right on the boundary between farmland and water.
The municipality covers about 33 square kilometres. To the north the land is divided into long, regular fields, while to the south the lines break up into side arms, oxbows and backwaters winding through the riverside forest. The main Danube channel runs along the southern edge and is the clearest line in the frame.
Schloss Orth, a castle with four corner towers, stands at the centre of the town and now houses a visitor centre for the national park.
