Brno lies where the Svratka and Svitava rivers meet in South Moravia. From above, the historic centre is a compact oval inside a ring of boulevards that replaced its fortifications. Two hills rise at its western edge. Petrov carries the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul, and the larger Špilberk is topped by its fortress and surrounded by parkland.
Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and the centre of Moravia. In the Augustinian abbey in Old Brno, Gregor Mendel carried out the pea experiments that founded genetics. Villa Tugendhat, designed by Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1930, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A large trade fair ground spreads along the Svratka southwest of the centre.

The Svratka and the Svitava pass through the south of the city and join there. They draw curved lines through the industrial and residential districts.
