Bratislava lies on the Danube where Slovakia meets Austria and Hungary, the only capital that borders two other countries. From above, the river divides the city clearly. The old town and castle sit on the north bank, below the last hills of the Little Carpathians, and Petržalka's large housing estate fills the flat land to the south.
The castle, a square building with four corner towers, stands on a hill above the Danube. Below it, St Martin's Cathedral marks the edge of the old town, where Hungarian kings were once crowned. Nearby, the Most SNP bridge with its disc-shaped restaurant on top crosses the river to Petržalka.
A Bratislava map poster sets the Danube in the middle of the composition. The tight medieval streets, the ring of boulevards around them and the long, regular blocks across the river make three distinct layers, and the wooded hills to the north give the map an open edge.
