Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, and on a map it looks like a long silver blade laid across western Hungary. It runs roughly southwest to northeast, and for most of its length it stays narrow enough that both shores sit comfortably in the same frame.
The two shores differ clearly. The northern side climbs into hills of volcanic origin, with vineyards and villages set on the slopes, so roads wind and branch. The southern shore is flat and continuous, lined almost without a break by resort towns, railway and holiday streets, Siófok the largest among them.
Near the middle, the Tihany peninsula juts out from the north and almost cuts the lake in two. A Lake Balaton map poster shows this pinch clearly, together with Keszthely at the western tip and the shallow water that keeps the lake warm in summer.

On the north side the terrain rises, so the road network becomes looser and winding, with villages spaced between the hills and vineyards.
